This region of France was an enormous battlefield during the First World War. Numerous soldiers from many nations were killed. Instead of disposing of the bodies, or returning them home (the latter would have taken too many resources), even the "enemies" were buried locally. This is one of many German soldier cemeteries in the region. There are a number of monuments in the graveyard. Stone crosses record the names, jobs, and death dates of over 1000 German soldiers. There are also a couple pits which were used to bury those who were unable to be identified.
