Pietà, ou Vierge de Pitié, est un thème artistique de l'iconographie en sculpture et peinture chrétienne représentant la Vierge Marie en Mater dolorosa (expression latine), mère pleurant son enfant qu'elle tient sur ses genoux, en l'occurrence Christ descendu mort de la Croix avant sa mise au tombeau, événement placé avant sa Résurrection, précédant son Ascension. Les exemples les plus anciens se trouvent en Italie et en Allemagne, notamment au sein de la tradition du Vesperbild (les images de dévotion pour l’office des vêpres). La scène de la Déploration du Christ est quant à elle traitée de manière plus ample et représente, en plus du Christ et de sa Mère, les autres personnages qui étaient auparavant au pied de la Croix.

A pietà; meaning "pity", "compassion") is a subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, most often found in sculpture. As such, it is a particular form of the Lamentation of Christ, a scene from the Passion of Christ found in cycles of the Life of Christ. When Christ and the Virgin are surrounded by other figures from the New Testament, the subject is strictly called a lamentation in English, although pietà is often used for this as well, and is the normal term in Italian.
