The Walker family take their summer holiday in the Lake District at Bank Ground Farm. The children, John, Susan, Titty and Roger, take the dinghy, Swallow, out onto the lake. On the lake they meet the Blackett children, Nancy & Peggy, who are sailing the dinghy Amazon. Nancy and Peggy are camping on an island in the lake. The two groups of children join forces against the Blackett’s Uncle Jim, known to the children as Captain Flint. Uncle Jim has gone into retreat on his houseboat to write his memoirs.
In order to determine which of the children will be leader of the joint expedition, they have a competition to see which side can capture the other’s boat. The Walkers win the competition. There is a mock battle between Uncle Jim and the children, after which Uncle Jim is made to walk the plank off his own houseboat
