The Elevation of 1070 metres, is declared on an elevated, reflective sign that is wide but 'shallow', held about 2.5 metres off the ground on two galvanised pipes. It is near the Springfield Road turnoff from the Monaro Highway (or Bombala Road, as it is locally known).
As the next sign, the Welcome Sign shows, just another '100 metres' up the road, Nimmitabel is commonly known, and advertised as the historic town, with the 'Old Mill' depicted on that sign.
Nimmitabel is about 430 km southwest of Sydney, on the edge of the Monaro plains. "It was once an important stopover for miners and prospectors making their way from the coast to the goldfields at Kiandra. Today it is a sleepy town with a small number of historic buildings." (
