The Botanical Building was built for the 1915–16 Panama–California Exposition and was reused essentially unchanged for the 1935 fair. It is one of the largest lath structures in the world.

The view of the Botanical Building with the Lily Pond in the foreground is one of the most photographed scenes in Balboa Park.
