Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient for action at Ashepoo River, SC on May 24, 1864. The spelling of his last name in the military was Scanlan. He is buried as Scanlon. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Farmington, CT.

He was born in 1838 in Ireland and died on September 5, 1903 in Farmington, CT. He advanced to the rank of Sergeant. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: SCANLAN, PATRICK
• Rank and organization: Private, Company A, 4th Massachusetts Cavalry
• Place and date: At Ashepoo River, S.C., 24 May 1864
• Entered service at: Spencer, Mass.
• Date of issue: 21 January 1897
Citation: Volunteered as a member of a boat crew which went to the rescue of a large number of Union soldiers on board the stranded steamer Boston, and with great gallantry assisted in conveying them to shore, being exposed during the entire time to a heavy fire from a Confederate battery.
