The former Walhalla Post Office opened on March 10th 1886 replacing the original one opened in a local store in 1864, at one stage the former Post Office was the third busiest in Gippsland. Until the arrival of the railway in 1910 the mail was delivered by horse drawn coach, once the mail was delivered huge crowds would gather outside awaiting the mail to be sorted. The building was only one of a few to remain after the disastrous 1888 bushfire wiped out most of the township.
In 1948 the Post Office was sold to the then Post-mistress Miss Doreen Hannan who continued to operate it until 1963. She then lived here until her death in 1988.
The building is now a museum with the area where the postal business was conducted still in it's original condition.
