The esteem that the Ancients made of the roosterfor his vigilance, his courage, his ardor inclined them to see him as a protective bird. To all the merits of the bird were added the part played in the denial of St. Peter and the coincidence between the morning song of the rooster and the morning of the Resurrection; ... this song gradually became inseparable from the idea of vigilance and prayer.

On the lamps, frescoes, sarcophagi, everywhere, the rooster made his way, until the day when, with a stroke of the wing, he perched on a first steeple. Where and when? It is in the ninth century that we meet him there.

In 820, a bishop melted a bronze rooster and placed it on the top of the church tower. Since then, the custom has spread everywhere, even in Canada, because who among us has not seen a rooster flutter on the top of a church steeple? (Excerpt from We Want to Know Leon Trépanier).
