Church Notre-Dame. Located a few kilometers south of Niort, the village today crossed by the highway is in the heart of the Protestant country; the church has suffered from the wars of religion. The parish depended under the Ancien Regime of the archpriest of Melle; it counted 250 communicants in 1782. The priory, of 3,000 pounds of income in 1716, was then at the presentation of the abbot of Déols. This elongated building is composed of three bays. Only the two Romanesque aisles of the nave are included in the supplementary inventory. The third span, forming the choir, and a small chapel to the north correspond to a redevelopment of the 19th century, when a low sacristy was added at the bedside. The parish cemetery is today still north of the church. The decoration of the building is sober. The slightly broken archway of the western facade is surmounted by a shattered bay and a campanile capped with an unusual pointed slate roof. The spans of the nave are vaulted on cross of warheads; they are separated by a thick doublet which falls on a round pile engaged with a capital. The second bay is lit by two splayed bays; the interior of the church, little lit, is covered with an ocher whitewash. A cornice supported by modillons with geometrical decoration runs at the top of the side walls of the nave. The choir and sacristy are covered with tiles; the nave and the chapel, slate. This building, almost demolished in the sixteenth century, had not been restored to a suitable state in the eighteenth century, as evidenced by the visit of the bishop of Poitiers in 1769: the parish was to fall back on the chapel of the chaplaincy of Fors. The 19th century developments have consolidated the church, rebuilt the choir and the chapel, but, a century later, the municipality is forced to have a net to avoid the untimely falls of stones. This determined the important work campaign begun in 1998 and will continue in 1999. The exterior facades of the nave have been restored, as well as its vaults, frame and roof. The most conspicuous disorders and the most damaging to the safety of the building and people have been repaired. The Safeguarding of French Art contributed in 1998 to this restoration, up to 100 000 F.

Eglise Notre-Dame. Situé à quelques kilomètres au sud de Niort, le village aujourd’hui traversé par l’autoroute est en plein pays protestant ; l’église a d’ailleurs souffert des Guerres de religion. La paroisse dépendait sous l’Ancien Régime de l’archiprêtré de Melle ; elle comptait 250 communiants en 1782. Le prieuré, de 3 000 livres de revenus en 1716, était alors à la présentation de l’abbé de Déols. Cet édifice longiligne est composé de trois travées. Seules les deux travées romanes de la nef sont inscrites à l’inventaire supplémentaire. La troisième travée, formant le chœur, et une petite chapelle au nord correspondent à un réaménagement du XIXe s., époque où l’on a ajouté une sacristie basse au chevet. Le cimetière paroissial est, aujourd’hui encore, au nord de l’église. La décoration de l’édifice est sobre. Le portail en arc légèrement brisé de la façade occidentale est surmonté d’une baie ébrasée et d’un campanile coiffé d ‘un insolite toit pointu d’ardoises. Les travées de la nef sont voûtées sur croisée d’ogives ; elles sont séparées par un doubleau épais qui retombe sur une pile ronde engagée à chapiteau. La deuxième travée est éclairée par deux baies ébrasées ; l’intérieur de l’église, peu éclairé, est recouvert d’un badigeon ocre. Une corniche soutenue de modillons à décor géométrique court au sommet des murs latéraux de la nef. Le chœur et la sacristie sont couverts de tuiles ; la nef et la chapelle, d’ardoises. Cet édifice, presque démoli au XVIe s., n’avait pas été remis dans un état convenable au XVIIIe s., comme en témoigne la visite de l’évêque de Poitiers en 1769 : la paroisse devait se replier sur la chapelle de l’aumônerie de Fors. Les aménagements du XIXe s. ont consolidé l’église, remanié le chœur et la chapelle, mais, un siècle plus tard, la municipalité est contrainte de disposer un filet pour éviter les chutes intempestives de pierres. C’est ce qui a déterminé l’importante campagne de travaux commencée en 1998 et qui se poursuivra en 1999. Les façades extérieures de la nef ont été restaurées, ainsi que ses voûtes, charpente et couverture. Les désordres les plus voyants et les plus dommageables à la sécurité de l’édifice et des personnes ont ainsi pu être réparés. La Sauvegarde de l’Art français a contribué en 1998 à cette remise en état, à hauteur de 100 000 F.
