This pub sign for the Star pub actually shows a picture of a spitfire plane, which seems to have nothing to do with a pub called the star.

The pub is on the banks of the Trent and Mersey canal next to a canal lock.

The pub sign is at the entrance to the car park, rather than next to the pub itself. The reason for the picture of the Spitfire dates back to the Second World War. As part of the war effort town and cities were encouraged to contribute money to enable Spitfire planes to be built to defend the UK.

In the case of the town of Stone, the pub was the organiser of the fundraising and managed to get enough contributions for the town to buy a Spitfire.
