The town of Choctaw was first plotted on land claimed during the Land Run of 1889. It began with a trading post and was a known camping spot. Choctaw City as it was known began in 1890, as primarily a cotton-growing farmland. The town was incorporated in 1904. During the post WWII days, people were drawn to the town as they obtained jobs at the nearby General Motors plant, and Tinker Air Force Base. Today, it is also a bedroom community for Oklahoma City which lies about 11 miles to the West.
Choctaw has a Council-Manager form of government with a Mayor and six Councilmen. The Mayor is elected at large every 4 years, and the Councilmen are elected every two years with over-lapping 4-year terms. Council meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday.
We visited at a perfect time of year - March - when the Bradford Pear trees that surround the building were in full bloom.
