Midwest City Fire Department has six stations, covering 26 square miles. They average 7000 calls a year, including fire, rescue and medical. This location is their headquarters (Station 1), located just east of the large City Hall complex. The Department was originated in 1943 shortly after the town was built. This two-story brick building was constructed in 1977.
In 1983, the Department formed the first Hazmat Team in Oklahoma and have won national awards for their training. Their Fire Prevention division enforces code, does inspections, and conducts public education. Investigators determine origin and cause of fires, issue citations for violations, review building and sprinkler plans, issue burn permits, map city hydrants, and register storm shelters. They install car seats, teach CPR, install smoke detectors, and conduct many activities with the surrounding schools. [information obtained from fire department website]
