During World War II, the U.S. Government War Department was looking for locations to build airfields with the expansion of the U.S. Army Air Corps. With hints of this in the air, W. P. "Bill" Atkinson bought up large tracts of land near where he thought a field might be built, to create a community near the base. He guessed correctly. The current Tinker Air Force Base was originally to be called Midwest Air Depot, and this is where Midwest City got its name. Homes were built, retail businesses were attracted, and a town was incorporated in 1943.
The town has a Council-Manager form of government with a Mayor and Councilmen from six Wards. The Council meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The town lies about four miles east of Oklahoma City and has a population of near 54,500.
The City Hall complex is a very large two-story brick building (see aerial photo) which houses all of the Administrative offices, plus the courts and the Police Department. The City has an extensive online services system, and a very informative website.
