The Massachusetts Civil War Research website list Martin S. Johnson as a member of the 53rd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry Link to Website whose members predominately came from from north-central Massachusetts. The 53rd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry served in Louisiana at the Battle of Port Huron where Martin S. Johnson was killed in battle.

His grave is marked by a 7' high, marble, family monument with a sculpture of an urn on top. The monument is inscribed:
