A few kilometres North-West of Turangi on SH41, just off the main road in the tiny township of Tokaanu, you will find the Tokaanu Hot Pools with a Free Thermal Bushwalk.

This boardwalk runs through a thermal area located beside the Tokaanu Hot Springs and Pools. Take a relaxing short walk around the natural thermal area located in attractive native bush, where you can see steaming hot mineral pools, set in sinter basins and spluttering mud pots. Mineral formations form around the clear pool waters, bubbling hot in clear emerald green and blue colours, while spluttering hissing sounds arise mysteriously from the ground beside the boardwalk. It only takes 20 minutes to follow the wooden walkway and is accessible by wheelchair. Be aware, this is dangerous thermal ground, KEEP ON THE TRACK/BOARDWALK at all times.

For hundreds of years, Maori have used the geothermal resources of this area for cooking, bathing and leisure. Share in this tradition by having a therapeutic and relaxing swim at the nearby Tokaanu Thermal Pools.

Rainbow trout can often be seen here in the cold Tokaanu stream that flows beside the thermal area.

Parking: Park in the Hot Pools carpark and walk across the little bridge, spot the trout in the waters below. Turn to your left and follow the short track to the trail signpost. The trail is a loop and returns to this same spot.
