Construction and rebuilding
In 1818 Jacob Pronk founded a wooden pavilion with a bathhouse on the Verlengde Badhuisstraat. In 1828, at the initiative of the mayor, a much larger 'Urban bathhouse' in classicist style, named Grand Hôtel des Bains, was designed by city architect Zeger Reyers. The Municipal Bathhouse was so successful that it was decided in 1856 to expand the bathhouse. The Kurhaus was built on the same site in the period from 1884 to 1885. After a fierce fire it was rebuilt between 1886 and 1887. It was designed by the German architects Johann Friedrich Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert. From 1858-1882 François Gerard Abraham Gevers Deynoot was mayor of The Hague. The square in front of the Kurhaus was named after him in 1891.
There was a busy nightlife at that time.
In the sixties, holidays abroad became more and more popular, which meant that tourist didn't came to the Kurhaus anymore. Around 1970 the building had fallen into disrepair so much that demolition threatened. The population of The Hague protested fiercely against this, after which in 1972 restoration and renovation was carried out. The renovation did mean that the two wings of the complex had to be completely demolished and then rebuilt. In 1975 it received the monument status. After the renovation, the Kurhaus was reopened on 8 May 1979 in the presence of Princess Beatrix. From May 8, 1979 to October 24, 2014, the Kurhaus was affiliated with the Steigenberger Hotel Group. Since October 24, 2014, the Kurhaus belongs to the Amrâth Hotel Group.
