The 78,000ha Pureora Forest Park is an ancient rainforest of giant native totara, rimu, matai, miro and kahikatea trees, rich with rare native bird life. The geographic centre of the North Island lies beneath its canopy, and the tallest totara in New Zealand has stood here for more than 1500 years.
Within the forest, at the "centre" of the North Island is a plinth with two engraved plaques. The plinth can be reached easily along a bush walking track, a short distance from the carpark. The track has boardwalks over small gullies to protect the delicate bush ferns and environment from foot damage. The trail head is reached after a long drive into the forest on a rough gravel road. Use your GPS or a reliable map to get there. Follow Link Road until you reach a signpost for the Centre of the North Island. Don't forget to check your spare tyre and fuel before leaving civilisation! It's a long way to walk to get help if you need it!
