The walkway starts from a Council lakeside reserve on Acacia Road, where a parking area is provided, and continues for approximately 2.5 kms around the shore to the outlet. The return walk of about an hour and a half features native vegetation, farmland, beach, lake and wetland scenery, expansive views and wildlife.

The first part of the walk is on a well formed track through the bush. Then you come to the boardwalk and an information panel about the birds, fish and plants that live in the wetland. There is a bird hide on the boardwalk and you can see a lot of birds along the way. The wetlands are home to a wide range of aquatic birds, such as black swan, canada goose, pied stilt, white-faced heron, mallard, paradise duck, grey teal, pukeko, coot, scaup, dabchick, shags and gulls.
The wooden boardwalk makes for easy walking over the marshland, protecting the environment and allowing you to get up close to the bird life. This reserve and walkway was constructed in 2001 in a joint project between local landowners, district and regional council and the local landcare group.

Lake Okareka is situated 9km southeast of Rotorua. Follow Tarawera road to Tikitapu/Blue Lake and take a left onto Okareka Loop Road. Once you reach the lake, turn right onto Acacia Road. The walkway starts from a lakeside reserve on Acacia Road and continues for approximately 2.5km around the shore to the outlet.
