This are Vermenton flood gates on the Canal d'Accolay. They are positioned at the start of the Canal d'Accolay at Vermenton at the point it leaves the River Cure.
The gates are closed when the River Cure goes into flood in order to protect the canal and its banks. Although floods in recent years have seen the waters going over the flood gates.
The canal was opened in 1880 and provided a link from Vermenton to the Canal du Nivernais at Bazarnes. The Canal du Nivernais was opened in 1842 and linked the Loire to the Seine via the navigable River Yonne at the Seine end.
The canal is very short compared with most canals as it is only 3.8 kilometres in length.
