Kuirau Park is a free geothermal park right in the center of Rotorua.
In the heart of Rotorua is New Zealand’s only geothermal public park and features: mud pools, boiling hot springs, a crater lake, all set in beautiful gardens and geothermal landscape. Wander along the boardwalk, through the sulphurous steam and see the colours of the various minerals in the landscape, hear the steaming, hissing, and boiling geothermal activity and watch the water bubbling straight out of the ground. There are also free thermal foot baths to relax tired feet in.... Please use them, do not try to wade in any other hot pools.
The boardwalk is sturdily built of wood planks and has railings for safety, do not attempt to climb or venture beyond the railings, people have received serious burns from the hot water. Visitors are strongly encouraged to stay on the cool side of the safety fences!
Legend of Kuirau Park: According to legend this lake was called Tawakahu and could be bathed in. A young lady called Kuirau would swim in it, but there was an old taniwha who would watch her, and could not bear it, and one day he seized her. This made the gods angry so they made the pool boil to get rid of him. From that day on the lake has been called Kuirau in her memory.
