The first post office in Rimouski dates back to 1832. From 1884, the population asked for a larger building from the government. The request was finally accepted in 1894. The construction of the building, which also serves customs, was completed in 1895. It was designed according to the plans of the architect Thomas Fuller, chief architect of the federal government. The building is of eclectic style, popular between 1880 and 1920. This type of architecture is rare in Rimouski since there are only a few buildings of this kind concentrated in the city center. The characteristics of this style are the massive and picturesque aspect, the large brick gable, the elaborate ornamentations. Here the boss stone contrasts with the red brick. The letters RV carved into the gable, signify, Victoria Regina, indicating that the building is built during the reign of Queen Victoria. The post office was enlarged in the rear in 1925 and 1948. There is a similar replica in Rivière-du-Loup, but made of stones. Since the post office moved in the 1950s, the building has been home to other federal government services.
