The Clinton City Hall building is a two-story tan brick building with a hipped roof. It houses the administrative offices for the city, as well as the municipal courts and police department. The entrance which faces south enters on the second level, as the street level is above the ground level of the building.
Clinton has a council-manager form of government and is governed by a Mayor and four councilmen. The council meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, and the meetings are open to the public.
Congress approved the purchase of land from the native Americans for Clinton in 1902. The town was first named Washita Junction, but when the Postal system would not accept that name, it was renamed Clinton after Judge Clinton Irwin. Clinton was and still is, a railroad hub, and when US Route 66 came through in the 1920's, it became a town for tourism and restaurants, as it was one of the largest towns on 66 between Oklahoma City and Amarillo, TX. Interstate 40 bypassed Clinton on the south in 1970, and much of the original 66 is now known as I-40 Bypass. Clinton is the site of the first state sponsored Rt. 66 museum in the nation.
