Une chronique sérieuse mais non authentifiée fait remonter l’origine de l’abbaye à un groupe de dames, épouses de chevaliers partis en croisade à la suite de Godefroid de Bouillon (1095). Sur le conseil du comte de Namur, ces dames se rassemblent dans une simple chapelle de Marche-sur-Meuse qu’elles font rapidement reconstruire en une église plus adéquate. Pendant deux ans elles y prient pour le retour victorieux de leurs maris.
À la fin de la croisade (1099) celles dont le mari n’est pas revenu s’installent à demeure à Marche - qui devient ‘Marche-les-Dames’ - et y fondent la première communauté monastique. La fondation est richement dotée par les chevaliers de Godefroid, remerciant ainsi la Vierge Marie pour leur retour victorieux au foyer.
L’église du monastère est consacrée en 1103, date qui marque la fondation officielle de l’abbaye. Puisque, durant des travaux de fondations, on découvre une statue de la Vierge Marie datée du XIIIe siècle dans une pièce d’eau, le monastère est consacré à Notre-Dame du Vivier. À la suppression du monastère, en 1796, cette statue est conservée à Namur jusqu'en 1880, année où elle revient

Een serieuze maar niet geauthenticeerde kroniek traceert de oorsprong van de abdij terug naar een groep dames, echtgenotes van ridders die op kruistocht gingen met Godefroid de Bouillon (1095). Op aanraden van de graaf van Namen verzamelden de dames zich in een eenvoudige kapel in Marche-sur-Meuse, die ze al snel hadden omgebouwd tot een meer geschikte kerk. Twee jaar lang bidden ze voor de zegevierende terugkeer van hun echtgenoten.
Aan het einde van de kruistocht (1099) vestigden zich degenen van wie de echtgenoten niet voorgoed terugkwamen in Marche - dat "Marche-les-Dames" werd - en stichtten er de eerste kloostergemeenschap. De stichting is rijkelijk begiftigd door de Ridders van Godefroid die zo de Heilige Maria bedanken voor hun zegevierende terugkeer naar huis.
De kloosterkerkerk werd ingewijd in 1103, de datum van de officiële stichting van de abdij. Omdat tijdens de funderingswerkzaamheden een 13e eeuws Mariabeeld in een vijver werd ontdekt, is het klooster gewijd aan Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van de Vivier. Toen het klooster in 1796 werd afgeschaft, werd dit beeld in Namen bewaard tot 1880, toen het terugkeerde.

A serious but not authenticated chronicle traces the origin of the abbey back to a group of ladies, wives of knights who went on a crusade following Godefroid de Bouillon (1095). On the advice of the Count of Namur, the ladies gathered in a simple chapel in Marche-sur-Meuse, which they quickly had rebuilt into a more appropriate church. For two years they pray for the victorious return of their husbands.
At the end of the crusade (1099), those whose husbands had not returned settled permanently in Marche - which became "Marche-les-Dames" - and founded the first monastic community there. The foundation is richly provided by the Knights of Godefroid, thus thanking the Virgin Mary for their victorious return to the home.
The monastery church was consecrated in 1103, the date of the abbey's official foundation. Because, during foundation work, a 13th century statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered in a water basin, the monastery is dedicated to Notre-Dame du Vivier. When the monastery was abolished in 1796, this statue was kept in Namur until 1880, when it returned to Namur.
