The town was founded as, and still is, a hub for the agriculture industry. Since 1974, the Town's claim to fame has been the world's largest Easter Egg. It is a beautiful site and technically called a Pysanka. It is symbolic of the large Ukrainian community who were pioneers that settled in Vegreville. For the last 45 years you can celebrate Ukrainian cullture at Vegreville's Annual Ukrainian Pysanka Festival.
The town has a nice recreation and aquatic centre and many parks including a campground and golf course. The downtown has a few independent restaurants and stores. Out on the edge of town you can find many of the franchises you see in most towns.
Town Hall was officially opened on October 18, 1973 by The Honourable Peter Lougheed, Premier of Alberta.
The town is named after Pere Valentin Vegreville, a missionary who served this area in the late 1800s and first few years of the 1900s.
