Julie’s great uncle Wally and his grandson Chris come to stay at Kirkby Farm whilst their house is being repaired. Uncle Wally is a retired Sergeant Major, who served in the Boer War and won a VC. Chris will soon be 19 and be enlisted into the army. Chris does not seem overly keen on the army. He is also prone to sleep walking. Tom finds him sleep walking towards the local quarry.
Uncle Wally is keen for Chris to join his old regiment and writes a letter to the commanding officer. Chris is sent to post the letter and has decided that he will destroy the letter. Unfortunately the postman grabs the letter before he can go through with it.
