[ENG] The Church of St. Jacob is one of the five main Evangelical Lutheran churches in Hamburg. St. Jacobi emerged from a chapel on a Way of St. James. It was first mentioned around 1255. The main part of the church dates back to a new construction in the 14th century: between 1350 and around 1400 a three-nave hall church in Gothic style was built. The church was destroyed in the Second World War. It burnt out and the tower fell through the vaults into the interior. The historic interior could have been evacuated beforehand. After the war, St. Jacobi was restored according to the medieval model until 1963; only the tower with a height of 125 m was designed modern by the Hamburg architects Hopp & Jäger.
