The trail was created in 2000 and commemorates the 75th anniversary of the creation of the City of Stoke.

Stoke Market
The first market in Stoke dates from 1794 in Hill
Street. This was replaced by a later market in
nearby Hide Street in 1835. From the late 1850’s
the market was transferred to the ground floor of
the then new Town Hall in Glebe Street. In 1883
the market relocated to a larger, purpose built
building on this site in Church Street. This
Victorian market was all but destroyed by a fire
on F.A. Cup Final day in 1982.
Only the clock tower, entrance
arch, fish section and shop
frontage survived. The current
market building in South
Wolfe Street was opened
in 1984, and the area
around the clock tower
was repaved as
an outdoor
market.
There is a leaflet to go with the trail which has the following introduction.
"Welcome to the town of Stoke, one
of the six towns that make up
the City of Stoke-on-Trent. This
heritage trail is a self-guided
walking tour around Stoke, taking in
some of the most significant places of historical interest in
the town. The trail can be started at any point, and is easily
accessible for most visitors. You can follow the trail using
this leaflet and the interpretation ‘paddles’ which are
located around the town.
Look out for the
pedestrian signs
which will point
you in the direction
of the heritage trail". link
The paddles are on top of poles and are made of grey metal. The titles are inscribed in yellow lettering, whilst the information is in white lettering.
This paddle is number four on the trail of 9 locations, it stands next to the wall of the facade of the old market that burned down in 1982.
