On the lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu, this 2 hour or 6km return walk following the Whakapapanui Stream begins near the Whakapapa holiday park by crossing the footbridge. This enjoyable walk through regenerating beech forest gives glimpses of the rushing waters of the stream and is a great option for a rainy day short walk. There is a section nearing the end of the walk, close to the Bruce Rd exit, that crosses a marshy tussock swamp with a boardwalk to protect the fragile environment. The boardwalk is typical of others throughout the Tongariro National Park, constructed by the Department of Conservation, using wooden planks and covered in wire mesh for grip in ice and snow.
Track info: Time: 2 hr return
Distance: 6 km return via same track or via the SH48 road
