The Battle of New Bern was fought on March 14, 1862 as part of the Burnside North Carolina Expedition of the American Civil War. Frazar Augustus Stearns, the son of the Amherst College's fourth president William Augustus Stearns, was an Adjutant to the 81st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers and was killed in this battle. He is Amherst's most celebrated casualty of the Civil War.
His grave is marked by a five sided granite headstone with an eight-pointed star. It is inscribed:
