A monument on the northwest corner of Government Street and Belleville Street opposite James Bay marks the spot Fort Victoria stood and where the colony of Vancouver's Island was inaugurated by Richard Blanschard, the Governor Vancouver Island.

Before Vancouver's Island became a colony it was administered by the Hudson's Bay Company which constructed Fort Victoria. An 8' tall field stone obelisk marks the site of Fort Victoria where in 1850 the colony of Victoria was inaugurated and give additional information about the history of Vancouver's Island. A bronze plaque on the obelisk is inscribed:
