The piece, along with its companion, "The Metallurgical Worker (The Puddler)" is located in Allentown's Arts Park on Fifth street.

Commissioned by steel magnate Charles Schwab in 1902, the pieces were destined for Schwab's private art gallery at his mansion in New York City. Schwab was the president of US Steel when the project began, but by the time of completion he was then head of Bethlehem Steel.

The pieces became property of Bethlehem Steel, and were eventually donated to the City of Allentown in 1982.

The pieces were created by renowned French sculptor Jean-Leon Gerome.

This sculpture is an allegorical representation of scientific metallurgy. Dressed in classical-style robes, the female figure has steel-making equipment at her feet. She is representing advances in the steelmaking industry.
