The Atwell community goes back into the 1880s, but the town wasn't established until 1898. It took nearly twenty years for Atwell to establish its own cemetery, using other nearby burial grounds in the meantime, so this is a fairly young cemetery by area standards. The paver itself is below the Texas Historical Marker for the cemetery -- it doesn't reference the earliest burial at all -- and it simply reads "Elizabeth Spradling Jones First Burial in Atwell Cemetery".

Mrs. Jones shares a modern gray granite headstone with her husband, and it reads:

G.G. Jones
Sept. 17, 1838
Jan. 5, 1925

---

Elizabeth, His Wife
Apr. 10, 1838
Jan. 27, 1917

---

Asleep in Jesus
