County of site: St. Louis Independent City
Location of arch: Mississippi Riverfront , end of 4th St., St. Louis
Composer: Erin Bodie
Lyrics: Erin Bode
Artist: Erin Bode

"As a singer comfortable moving between the jazz and folk worlds, Erin Bode has often been hailed as St. Louis' answer to Norah Jones. Her talent has taken her far and wide, but on "St. Louis Song" she plants her feet in her hometown. The track, from Bode's 2006 release Over and Over from the Webster Groves-based MAXJAZZ label, could be set in any city where two lovers part ways, but something about Bode's lyrics fits our city like a glove. Her man wants to leave St. Louis, but she wants to stay, though she sounds confident that he'll return home someday. Any outsider who has ever fallen in love with a Mound City native probably knows the feeling, and as Bode glides through the delicate guitar figure and sonorous bass runs, she tells of a love for her city that, at least this time, trumps romance." ~ Christian Schaeffer

Lyrics:
I'll never forget how you told me
We were sitting there in your car
You said there were dreams that you had for your life
And staying put is not who you are

That was the last time I saw you
You were gone the very next day
Trying to hide from the tears in my eyes
There's so much that I never could say

When you come back to St. Louis
And I know that you will someday
I won't be angry with you for leaving
I understand why you couldn't stay

I was sure one day that I saw you
But I knew that it couldn't be true
My eyes were just playing tricks on my heart
As my eyes so often will do

That was a long time ago
I find I can't picture your face anymore
I do hope you found what you went looking for

So please come back to St. Louis
It's not the same 'round here when you're gone
I will wait for you in St. Louis
