Florence Baptistery is dedicated to San Giovanni. It was built over the fifth century on the ruins of ancient Roman buildings. It is one of the oldest buildings in Florence, being constructed as a church between 1059, when was consecrated on November 6, 1059 by Pope Nicholas II, and 1128 in the Florentine Romanesque style. In 1128 the church became the official the Baptistery of Florence.
The façade of the octagonal structure is is made of of white and green marble, which is characteristic of the eleventh century. The baptistery has a pavilion roof topped by an octagonal lantern which was added around 1150.
