known as by the name of
MUMBET
died Dec. 28, 1829
Her supposed age
was 85 Years
She was born a slave and
remained a slave for nearly
thirty years. She could nei-
ther read nor write yet in
her own sphere she had no
superior nor equal. She nei-
ther wasted time nor property.
She never violated a trust nor
failed to perform a duty.
In every situation of dome-
stic trial she was the most eff-
icient helper, and the tenderest
friend. Good Mother, farewell.

Description:

Mumbet was born into slavery. She worked in the house of Colonel John Ashley. She was the first person in Massachusetts to used the Massachusetts constitution in her suit Brom and Bett v. Ashley (1781) to win her freedom in court. She then took the name Elizabeth Freeman.

Her case was cited in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling that helped pave the way for Massachusetts' abolition of slavery in 1783. This began a of a chain of events that would lead to the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865.
