Beginning in the late 1980s, Canada Post began issuing flag definitive postage stamps showing the Canadian flag superimposed over various scenes. In 2004, five different flag designs were produced for the new first-class letter rate of 50 cents. These literally spanned the country from coast to coast as one showed a scene from British Columbia on the Pacific coast and another featured this scene from the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland. If there was a theme to these five stamps, it was color. This scene was chosen for the brightly colored houses in this coastal village.
Twillingate was once home to a thriving fishing community but that has largely given way to tourism. Today, Twillingate claims to be the “iceberg capital of the world” and several outfits run seasonal boat excursions for up close views. Also nearby is the Long Point Lighthouse located in a scenic area with several hiking trails.
