Remarks: "The monument was restored in 1940. The restoration was funded through an appropriation made by the county commissioners. Restoration work included sanding the monument, constructing a new base, and sandblasting names of the war dead into the marble. IAS files contain transcriptions of names listed on monument." ~ Smithsonian American Art Museum
Proper Description: "A marble eagle surmounts a tall marble shaft. The eagle's wings are partially spread and it holds the national ensign in its beak and talons. On the east side of the shaft is a small shield resting upon oak and myrtle. Below that is a large wreath. On the north side are crossed swords and a wreath. On the south side is a knapsack supporting crossed muskets and flags and a soldier's cap. On the west side is the coat-of-arms for the state of Indiana. The shaft ends in a three-stepped limestone base. Short, square, limestone columns adorn each corner of the lowest step. The base rests on a concrete pad." ~ Smithsonian American Art Museum
