The Puerta de San Vicente is a monumental door located in the Glorieta de San Vicente in Madrid (Spain) .1 It occupies since 1995 the space in which between 1775 and 1892 was the original door, work of the architect Francesco Sabatini.

History
Throughout the history of Madrid there have been several doors that have received the same name. In 1726, the Marquis of Vadillo, corregidor of the town, commissioned Pedro de Ribera to build a monumental gate on the city's fence, to replace an earlier door, which was in a ruinous state and was called "del Parque". The door, which consisted of three arches, was adorned with a statue of Saint Vincent, for which it received that name, although it would also be known later as the door to Florida.

It was demolished in 1770, due to the remodeling of the Cuesta de San Vicente (1767-1777), as part of the reorganization of the western accesses to the Royal Palace and its connection to the Camino de El Pardo. Soon after, King Charles III commissioned Francesco Sabatini to build a new gate to replace the previous one as the entrance to the city from the new Paseo de La Florida. The works ended in 1775 and Sabatini placed next to it an ornamental fountain, popularly called Fuente de los Mascarones.

The new door was in its current location, closer to the river than the previous one. It consisted of an arch and two shutters (or portillos) and was built of granite and limestone from Colmenar de Oreja. The arch was ornamented with two Doric columns on the outside and two pilasters, also Doric, in the interior. It was crowned by a triangular frontispiece topped with a military trophy. The lateral shutters were also crowned by military trophies. In front of it there were two buildings also disappeared: the aforementioned fountain of the Mascarones, between 1775 and 1871, and the Asile de Lavanderas, promoted by María Victoria dal Pozzo, from 1872 to 1938.

In 1890 the door was dismantled to improve traffic in the area (other sources give the date of 1892), however, the track of its remains was lost, which remain unknown whereabouts (there are theories that claim that its stone is they made cobblestones, others that were taken to the municipal warehouses of the Casa de Campo and then, in the face of disinterest for them, were buried, but were never found despite being searched in the final decades of the twentieth century).
In the decade of 1990 the city council of Madrid decided to replace the door in the same place in which it was. For this, a replica was made under the direction of the engineer Juan A. de las Heras Azcona, being placed in reverse position to the original, that is, looking at the city. The new door of San Vicente then moved to the source of Juan de Villanueva, which was in that location since 1952, and which was transferred to the Parque del Oeste.

For the replica, in concrete plated in gray granite and limestone, we took advantage of the moldings of the upper cornices that were still preserved from the original, in addition to the reference of the original plans and an 1890 photograph of Laurent. Among the elements reproduced, the ornaments by José Luis Parés Parra stand out.
