The plaque for the display reads:
Sir William Congreve designed this light maneuvrable gun to accompany fast-moving units of Britishe Light Infantry. Weight a total of 500 pounds when mounted on its own special carriage, it was usually pulled by one horse, but could be readily packed on animals or even carried by eight men in places too rugged for towing. These guns, or "grasshoppers: as they were called, were ideal for the poor roads and rough conditions encountered in the Southern Campaign. At Guilford Courthouse, two three-pounders of the Royal Artillery supported the British infantry with their close and rapid fire. Solid shot, canister and grapeshot were the primary types of ammunition.
The gun tube (barrel) was cast solid, then bored and lathe-turned on a special machine invented by Jan Verbruggen, a master Dutch gun founder. He and son, Pieter, Britain's Master Founders between 1770-1786, produced strong, but light gun tubes incised with the government's "broad arrow" mark of ownership.
