A T-28 "Trojan" tactical training plane and a plaque in front of the Cozumel Air Force Base honors the men of the Mexican Expeditionary Force 201st Fighter Squadron who fought in World War II. The plaque includes the names of five members of the Mexican Air Force who died in combat.
The plaque is inscribed:
COZUMEL COMMUNITY RECOGNITION
FOR THE HEROIC PARTICIPATION OF THE "MEXICAN EXPEDITIONARY
FORCE 201ST" FIGHTER SQUADRON ALSO KNOWN AS THE "AZETC
EAGLES", IN COMBAT MISSIONS DURING THE WORLD WAR II IN
DEFENSE OF THE WORLD FREEDOM AND THE HONOR OF MEXICO.
THESE MEN WERE BATTLING IN FIGHTER PLANES P-47 "THUNDERBOLT"
AGAINST JAPANESE IMPERIAL ARMY FORCES FOR THE PHILIPPINES
LIBERATION AND WERE ATTACHED TO THE 58TH AMERICAN
FIGHTER GROUP OF THE 5TH FIGHTING COMMAND OF THE V AIR
FORCE OF NORTH AMERICA IN 1945. THEY RETURNED TO THEIR
HOMELAND ON NOVEMBER 18TH THE SAME YEAR.
AIRPLANE, NORTH AMERICAN T-28 "TROJAN", WAS USED FOR
TACTICAL TRAINING BY THE SQUADRON 201 FROM 1961-1980 ON
COZUMEL ISLAND, AND WAS USED IN THE PHILIPPINES ISLANDS" PANCHO PISTOLAS".
