This plaza, which gives access to the pedestrian street León y Castillo, was inaugurated in 1982 as a tribute to the watercolour painter Guillermo Sureda Arbelo (1912-2006). The City Council of Arucas named him Favourite Son at the plenary session of 21 December 1982. He is also Adoptive Son of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Juan de Puerto Rico. A versatile artist, he studied drawing at the Institute of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and music at the Conservatory of that city, becoming a violinist with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of the Circle of Fine Arts. He died on 11 February 2006 at the age of 93 in Miami, where he lived for many years. Subsequently, his family moved his ashes to his hometown, staying under the artist's bust in the stone temple that adorns the square.
The plain plaza, with the eye-catcher of the memorial pavilion, was restored in 1995 and an abstract group of sculptures by the artist Leopoldo Emperador was placed on the opposite side of the plaza as an antithesis.
