In the episodes The Prisoner (Ep 5) and The Secret Boat (Ep 6) Two German POWs escape. The first Tom Grattan and his cousin Julie hear of this is when they come across a British army search party. They decide to look for the POWs, based on a list of places Stan Hobbs reckons they might hide at. At a ruined castle Tom and Julie split up. Julie comes across one of the POWs, Pieter, which she feels sympathy for. She doesn’t tell Tom of her find. Early next morning Julie takes food and drink for Pieter, who is grateful and lets Julie leave. Unfortunately his companion, Klaus, doesn’t trust Julie and takes her hostage as she leaves. Klaus, Pieter and Julie leave the castle for a boat on the coast that Klaus has found.

Tom saw Julie leave and arrives at the castle sometime after the trio have left. He finds a German uniform and goes home to tell Stan. Stan takes Tom to see the army captain in charge of the search. The search party sets off for the castle. Meanwhile, Pieter tries to free Julie but Klaus recaptures her. Pieter is knocked out by Klaus in a struggle and doesn’t notice that Klaus and Julie have crossed the river. Pieter continues on the same side of the river and his scent is picked up by the search party’s tracker dog. Pieter is captured and tells the party that Klaus and Julie are heading for Kettleness. The party follow Klaus and Julie to the beach and Klaus is shot by a marksman, freeing Julie.
