For several years now, Bpost has been creating sheets dedicated to Belgian city centres in the context of the Promotion of Philately. In 2018 the series will focus on the main monuments erected on the Namur squares
Explication
Former Trade Exchange, now Palais des Congrès.
In the neo-Renaissance style, it was built from 1932 to 1934 in front of an old surrounding tower that had become a belfry: the Saint-Jacques tower, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located in the centre of the future capital of Wallonia, it was the setting for the congresses of the main groups campaigning for Wallonia's autonomy, such as the Mouvement populaire wallon in 1961 and the Rassemblement wallon in 1968.
On 23 December 1981, the Walloon Regional Council - now the "Walloon Parliament" - left its temporary premises at the Sofitel Hotel in Wépion to move to the former trading exchange. Until Belgium's official transformation into a federal state in 1993, this regional council will be composed of national deputies and senators elected in Wallonia. The first direct election of Walloon deputies will take place in 1995.
Until their move to the former Saint-Gilles hospice in 1998, the Walloon representatives met here, which has now become a modern conference centre, helping to affirm Namur's role as the capital of Wallonia.
