This sculpture honours those of Asian heritage who came to Canada from China beginning in 1858, and up to 1947.

The project was completed in mid-2001. It was a project of the Government of Canada's Millennium Bureau of Canada and had additional sponsorship from The City of Calgary and The Government of Alberta. Community partners included the Sien Lok Society and several private sector contributors.

The overall shape of the sculpture represents the four corners of Canada. The Dragon and Phoenix represent good luck and Man and woman together in Canada. It is a dedication to the early Chinese pioneers who paved the way for a prosperous future.
