This bronze statue of Dr. Martin Luther King stands at the northwest corner Kelly Ingram Park, now part of the Birmingham Civil Rights Walk. Kelly Ingram Park was the scene of some of the most memorable and violent clashes during the civil rights era Birmingham.
On the base of the statue are inscribed the following words:
"DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Born
Jan. 15 1929
Assassinated
Apr. 4, 1968

His dream liberated Birmingham from itself and began a new day of love, mutual respect and cooperation.
The statue of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior erected by citizens of Birmingham as an indication of the esteem for him and in appreciation of his sacrificial service to mankind.

Dr. King visited Birmingham many times during the civil rights movement, and spent many days in the city jail . He preached multiple times at the 16th Street Baptist Church across the street, site of a horrific Klan bombing that killed four little girls.
