the church was modeled after the Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. King Frederick William IV dreamed of a "christian state" where the king was regarded as a divine emissary. The mosaic in the cupola, showing Jesus on a throne was to underline this aspiration (pictures below).
The mosaic was relocated from the church San Cipriano in the Venetian Lagoon, which was scheduled for demolition.
King Frederick William IV and his wife Elisabeth Ludovika are buried in a crypt in the church.

The church holds an open service every Sunday at 10 AM. There are also organ concerts on a regular basis.
In addition, from March 15 to October 15, it is open to the public from 9AM to 5 PM daily. The church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin and every year an estimated 100,000 visitors to the parks find a moment of peace and reflection in this church.
