Mesa was founded as a farm community and remained so well into the 20th century. At the time, the intersection of Main Street and MacDonald Street was the center of the business district. Transportation was still by horse drawn wagon. Today the age of the automobile has come and is receding. While Main once carried U.S. Highways 60, 70, 80 and 89, cars are now restricted and light rail predominates through the center of town.
