D’abord militaire, la tourelle servit de poste d’observation pour les « guetteurs » qui alertaient la ville en cas d’incendies, nom que la tour a conservé jusqu’à nos jours.
Il est difficile de fixer une date précise de la première élévation de la tourelle ; cependant, on parle de sa reconstruction en 1852 dans un style néo-gothique, alors en vogue à cette époque.
Aujourd’hui devenue tour emblématique de la Ville, la tour du Guetteur constitue depuis sa construction une composante essentielle de la silhouette de la citadelle, perçue aussi bien du côté Jambes que du côté Namur.
Oorspronkelijk een militaire koepel die diende als observatiepost voor de "wachters" die de stad waarschuwden in geval van brand, een naam die de toren tot op de dag van vandaag heeft behouden.
Het is moeilijk om een precieze datum te bepalen voor de eerste verhoging van de toren, maar we hebben het over de reconstructie in 1852 in neogotische stijl, toen nog in zwang.

It is difficult to determine a precise date for the first elevation of the turret; however, we are talking about its reconstruction in 1852 in a neo-Gothic style, then in vogue at that time.
Now an emblematic tower of the City, the Watchtower has been an essential component of the citadel's silhouette since its construction, seen from both sides of the citadel, Jambes and Namur.
