The Charca de Maspalomas is a small seawater lagoon that testifies to the former marshland in Maspalomas that was destroyed by the development of the surrounding area. The lagoon is separated from the sea by a strip of sand that breaks in the event of heavy rainfall and allows the renewal of the lagoon water and the intrusion of fish and other organisms. One of the most important features of this ecosystem is its seasonality, which is reflected in major changes in salinity and water volume, as well as in the different bird communities that come here. Around the Charca there are spots of reedbed vegetation and tamarisk woods that are essential for birds and invertebrates. They provide excellent shelter for migratory and nesting birds.

Several boards provide information about the area, with the emphasis on information about the bird species that can be found here.
These are e.g: Curlew, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Sanderling, Rock Tomes and Little Plover.
