This unnamed anchor graces the front of the Bayfield Historical Society & Archives' building. The community of Bayfield is on Lake Huron and its history has been shaped by the lake.
There is a sign near the beach that states Bayfield was named after British naval hydrographer Henry Wolsey Bayfield. At one point a flour, grist and sawmill were established on the river. Whitefish, perch, pickerel, and early on, herring, had a consistent market in Toronto, Chicago and New York. Each winter "putting up the ice" involved horses which dragged the block of ice to ice houses on the north shore. Sawdust, from the sawmill insulated the blocks of ice which were sold to hotels, restaurants, and residents.
